Biology 41 - Contemporary Biology Long Beach City College Instructor: Chris Davison Phone: (562) 938-4384; has voicemail Fall 2005 Office: D256 email: [email protected] Lecture: MW0800 Hours: M 1000-1100, 1300-1400 Section 70847 T 1200-1300 W 1000 – 1100 R 1200-1300 Required Textbook: Essential Biology with Physiology by Campbell, Reece and Simon. You will also need 4 Scantron # 882 forms and some #2 pencils for the exams. Optional material: Study Guide, Essential Biology with Physiology by Edward J. Zalisko Course description: This course covers basic principles of biology such as molecular biology, evolution, taxonomy, basic similarities of living patterns, basic anatomy and physiology of body systems, genetic continuity, ecology, and the environment. Attendance: Regular attendance is required, absences may result in your being dropped from the class. Attendance may be taken any time during the class period, if you are absent when attendance is taken then you are counted as absent. In the unlikely event that I am stuck in traffic or otherwise delayed I will call my department so that students are notified. Grading: Grades are based solely on the accumulation of points during the course. Points are earned from the following: Grades will be assigned as follows: Quizzes: Six quizzes will be given. The lowest score will be dropped and the top 5 quiz scores will be used to determine your grade. Missed quizzes can only be made up if approved in advance. Exams: Four lecture exams will be given. The lowest score will be dropped and the top 3 will be used to determine your grade. Missed exams can only be made up if approved in advance. The final exam will be comprehensive and cannot be dropped. Topic report: Find a biology topic that interests you from an article in a newspaper, magazine, internet site or other publication. The article must be no more than one year old. Your report must include the following: 1) summarize the information in the article; 2) discuss the importance to biology; 3) discuss how the information is relevant to your life; 4) attach a photocopy of the article to the back of the report. The report must be 2 pages, typed, double spaced with one inch margins. Refer to the lecture schedule for the due date. Student conduct: The student code of conduct is expected to be followed at all times. This includes arriving on time and prepared for class, not talking, and turning cellphones off during lecture. If you are caught cheating or attempting to cheat, you will be removed from the class and will receive an F grade. Cheating includes, but is not limited to, giving information or receiving information during an exam or quiz. Be sure to inform me of any special needs in a timely manner so that appropriate accommodations can be arranged.
