EVERYONE in that group must visit a business of the type you are assigned to. You can do the visit as a group or as an individual.It is your choice. A group coordinator will be DESIGNATED. They can choose toNOT be the coordinator, then the next person on the list will be the list. They may choose to not be the coordinator, and so on. Somebody must take the coordinator position within your group or you are all expected to do the exercise on your own.4. The coordinator should send a class emailing list email IMMEDIATELY to get contact info of all the group to coordinate the groups activities. If you choose to do the visit on your own, please let the coordinator know your intensions, immediately.5. You / your group will make an appointment with a business to do observations and interviews.6. Go and do those observations and interviews completing the observation and interview forms. Each student will do their own independent forms.7. Do analysis of that gathered information and complete the task analysis worksheet.8. Take the printout AND your NYU ID with you.You will be assigned to one of the business types we will be examining.Go to a facility and observe the users of that facility.Check the website for the BUSINESS TYPE and GROUP you are assigned to.Second: Important – always act in a respectful, polite and business like manner. Dress nicely and appropriately for the type of venue you are visiting. Use proper English (avoid slang) and never use profanity or foul or offensive speech. Address everyone as Mrs., Ms., Mr. or Dr., as appropriate to address the person you are speaking with. Think of this as you are gong to a job interview and act in that way.Remember you are a representative of NYU & CIMS and you want to leave a great impression. Consider that sometime later you might end up interviewing for a job at this business and maybe even with the same manager. Take this opportunity to show your professionalism and make a great impression.For the following you may use the scripts provided at the end of this assignment or if youfeel confident enough say it in your own words.Look up in the phone directory a location that will be convenient for you to visit during normal business hours. Find out what hours the location is open. Call the number and ask to speak with manager. Introduce yourself as an NYU student doing an assignment. Ask the manager for their name and title. Ask if they have a few minutes to talk with you. Explain what your assignment is and what you’d be doing.Introduce yourself and POLITELY explain to the manager of the facility that you are doing an assignment for a course on User Interface Design. Tell the manager that he/she may call my cell phone (917-783-7477) if they wish to speak to me and/or verify your story or they wish to follow up with me for any reasonExplain that as part of this class you need to make field observations about the tasks, activities, goals and types of users for that type of business. Explain that you’d need to visit the facility and watch and take notes for around 20 minutes. Unauthorized use or duplication prohibited.Explain that the goal is to get a real world experience at gather information about a business, its business processes, the roles, goals, tasks and activities of the employees. This information will be used to help design a User Interface that would support the business functions that those employees would perform. All of this as part of the learning process of this class. Provide the manager with the URL of the class website, if they’d like to take a look at what we are doing.Tell them you would need approximately 1 hour of time for the visit and only a few minutes of their time that day. Tell them you’d like to observe for around 30 minutes and then do brief interviews with one, two, or three of the manager’s employees. It is important that you interview the Employees and NOT the manager if possible. Ask if it would be OK, after observing the workflow of the employees, to talk with a few employees of that business about what they do. These interviews would be only ten minutes in length. Each employee would be interviewed separately. Explain, if there are more than one of you visiting, how many of you will be coming.Ask if the manager would allow you to visit and do your observations and interviews.If they say “Yes” ask when would be a good date and time, Agree on a date and time to come and do the observations and interviews. Thank them for their time and support. Say goodbye and see you on the agreed upon date and time.If the manager says “No”. Thank them for their time and consideration, anyway. Say goodbye. The repeat the Second step (this step) again. Try at least three times. If no one will allow you to visit, send me an email and we will make alternative plans.Try not to all go to the same physical business location as separate trips by different students. Send emails to those with the same assigned business type and coordinate amongst yourselves to visit different locations, if possible.You MUST go to the type of business you have been assigned to or you will get ZERO credit for this assignment. Check the assignment matrix at the end for your student ID and the type of business you should visit.You may get together with the others that have the same assigned business and do the visit as a group.
