1Speech Service Option Standard for Wideband Spread Spectrum2Digital Cellular System3PN-xxxx (to be published as TIA/EIA/IS-96-B)4File Name: PN-xxxx (96AtoB);015February, 14 1996 Baseline Version6© 1996 TIATIA/EIA/PN-xxxx (Proposed IS-96-B) Baseline Text Page iPREFACE1These technical requirements form a standard for Service Option 1, a variable rate, two-way2speech service option. Service Option 1 conforms to the general requirements for service3options specified in IS-95 “Mobile Station-Base Station Compatibility Standard for Dual-4Mode Wideband Spread Spectrum Cellular System.” A mobile station operating in5wideband spread spectrum (CDMA) mode conforming with IS-95 and this standard can ob-6tain speech service in any cellular system conforming with these standards.7This standard does not address the quality or reliability of Service Option 1, nor does it8cover equipment performance or measurement procedures.910SECTION SUMMARY111. General. This section defines the terms and numeric indicators used in this document.122. Service Option 1: Variable Data Rate Two Way Voice. This section describes the13requirements for Service Option 1. Included in these requirements is the description of a14speech codec algorithm for variable rate, two-way voice.1516NOTES171. The term “dual-mode mobile station” indicates a mobile station capable of both18analog (FM) and wideband spread spectrum (CDMA) operation. The term19“wideband spread spectrum dual-mode mobile station” is used when a confusion20might arise between a dual-mode mobile station complying with this document and21EIA/TIA/IS-54.222. “Recommended Minimum Performance Standard for Wideband Spread Spectrum23Digital Cellular System Speech Service Options,” provides specifications and24measurement methods for cellular equipment designed to provide Service Option 1.253. “Base station” refers to the functions performed on the land side, which are26typically distributed among a cell, a sector of a cell, and a mobile or personal27 communications switching center.284. Section 2 uses the following verbal forms: “Shall” and “shall not” identify29requirements to be followed strictly to conform to the standard and from which no30deviation is permitted. “Should” and “should not” indicate that one of several31possibilities is recommended as particularly suitable, without mentioning or32excluding others; that a certain course of action is preferred but not necessarily33required; or that (in the negative form) that a certain possibility or course of action34is discouraged but not prohibited. “May” and “need not” indicate a course of action35permissible within the limits of the standard. “Can” and “cannot” are used for36statements of possibility and capability, whether material, physical, or causal.375. Footnotes appear at various points in this specification to elaborate and further38clarify items discussed in the body of the specification.3940Page ii Baseline Text TIA/EIA/PN-xxxx (Proposed IS-96-B)NOTES16. Unless indicated otherwise, this document presents numbers in decimal form.2Binary numbers are distinguished in the text by the use of single quotation marks.3In some tables, binary values may appear without single quotation marks if table4notation clearly specifies that values are binary. The character ‘x’ is used to5represent a binary bit of unspecified value. For example ‘xxx00010’ represents any68-bit binary value such that the least significant five bits equal ‘00010’.7Hexadecimal numbers (base 16) are distinguished in the text by use of the form80xh…h where h…h represents a string of hexadecimal digits. For example, 0x2fa19represents a number whose binary value is ‘10111110100001’ and whose decimal10value is 913. Note that the exact number of bits in the binary representation of a11hexadecimal number strictly depends on the implementation requirements for the12variable being represented.137. The following conventions apply to mathematical expressions in this standard:14• x indicates the largest integer less than or equal to x: 1.1 = 1, 1.0 = 1.15• x indicates the smallest integer greater or equal to x: 1.1 = 2, 2.0 = 2.16• |x| indicates the absolute value of x: |-17|=17, |17|=17.17• ⊕ indicates exclusive OR.18• min (x, y) indicates the minimum of x and y.19• max (x, y) indicates the maximum of x and y.20• In figures, × indicates multiplication. In formulas within the text, multiplication21is implicit. For example, if h(n) and pL(n) are functions, then h(n) pL(n) = h(n) ×22pL(n).23• x mod y indicates the remainder after dividing x by y: x mod y = x - (y x/y).24• round(x) is traditional rounding: round(x) = x + 0.5.25• sign (x) = 1x≥0−1x<0 .26• ∑ indicates summation. If the summation symbol specifies initial and terminal27values, and the initial value is greater than the terminal value, then the value of28the summation is 0. For example, if N=0, and if f(n) represents an arbitrary29function, then30 ∑n=1Nf(n) = 0.31• The bracket operator, [ ], isolates individual bits of a binary value. VAR[n] refers32to bit n of the binary representation of the value of the variable VAR, such that33VAR[0] is the least significant bit of VAR. The value of VAR[n] is either 0 or 1.34• This standard uses the two-sided z-transform as given below. See Oppenheim,35A.V. and Schafer, R. W., Digital Signal Processing, pp. 45 - 86.36F(z) = ∑i= -∞∞xiz-i .37TIA/EIA/PN-xxxx (Proposed IS-96-B) Baseline Text Page iiiNOTES1 8. The term “mobile station” is equivalent to the term “persona l station.” 2 9. All references to TIA/EIA/IS-95-A shall be inclusive of text adopted by TSBXX3 (PN - 3570). 4 10.
