Aersp 401 Final Report Outline and Style Guide Your report must follow this outline: 1. Title page – report title, course name and number, team name/number, list of team members, date submitted. 2. Abstract – a summary of the entire report (not an introduction). Write this after you finish the report. Specifically, the abstract should include summaries of: the motivation, primary objective(s), mission architecture, overall mass, cost, and power requirements, subsystem decisions (in the same order as #6 below), ethical issues, remaining work for next semester. Length of approx. 1-2 pages 3. Table of contents – list section names and page numbers 4. Introduction – explicitly state the motivation for your mission, primary and secondary objectives; overall cost; ethical considerations; state the overall design level being reported (conceptual, preliminary or detailed). 5. Mission Architecture -- include an overview of the mission, sequence of events (with a graphical timeline), mission scenario cartoon(s). 6. Subsystems (in the following order): a. Structure b. Launch Vehicle c. Propulsion d. Ground control e. Communications f. Command & Data Handling g. Guidance, navigation & control (orbit and attitude) h. Power i. Thermal j. Scientific instruments 7. Summary tables of mass, power, and cost 8. Recommendations for future work – include plans for how you will proceed with the design. Address unresolved issues regarding mission architecture, timelines, mass, cost, power, and any other critical matters. Also address each subsystem (in the same order as above). Be as specific as possible, since a little planning here will direct your efforts for the remainder of the semester. Remember, in the final semester report, you will need to include approximate physical dimensions, masses, power requirements and overall cost. 9. ReferencesStyle Guide for Aersp 401 Design Reports 1. Fonts – use Times New Roman • title page – 18 point, boldface (include list of team members) • body text -- 12 point • section headings – 12 point, but use boldface, underline, or italics to denote different heading levels • figures – other fonts and sizes are acceptable 2. Spacing – double-space the main text and references 3. Margins – at least 1.5 inches left/right, 1 inch top/bottom – this may require reducing some figures. (Wide margins needed for instructors’ comments.) 4. Tables – include a title for each table, positioned above it. Number each table in title (e.g. Table 1. Properties of Martian Atmosphere). Cite source reference in Table title (or in footnote at the bottom of the table). 5. Figures – include a caption for each figure, positioned below it. Number each figure (e.g., Figure 1. Map of Potential Landing Sites). Make certain that text on figures is large enough to read. Include tags and labels for the key parts of a figure. Unless you intend to submit color copies, beware the use of color, since black/white copies may not show different colors very well. Cite source reference in figure caption. 6. Equations (if any) – number them at the right-hand margin. Example: maF= (1) 7. References – give complete information, including author names, title of book, paper, or article, publisher, date, meeting name and location (if a conference presentation), page numbers. For websites, give complete URL and indicate date that you accessed the site. (Remember to cite references for figures and tables copied from other sources. Cite reference for data taken from other source even if you reformat it for your own tables). Cite references in the text where they are used. 8. When in doubt,
