Why Use the Library…When you can use GoogleNarrated By: Ann Ewbank, and Kristen Michelle JamesonWhy Use the Library…When you can use GoogleNarrated By: Ann Ewbank, and Kristen MichelleJamesonNARRATOR: One of the most common questions that students ask when doing research is if they can use internet sites when they are identifying resources for writing a research paper. While many instructors do allow students to use some web sources, ultimately, they are going to require you to use books and articles from library databases. Let’s take a look at a typical scenario that happens every day on the ASU campuses.SLIDE 2:ANNA: Hi, Dr. Carlock. Do you have a few minutes?DR. CARLOCK: Sure Anna. What’s up?ANNA: It’s about my paper- I don’t understand why my draft got such a bad grade at all!DR. CARLOCK: Well, you had one major problem: you didn’t follow directions for the assignment.SLIDE 3:DR. CARLOCK: If you’ll remember, the assignment called for you to use sources from journal articles. You only used websites like Wikipedia.ANNA: Oh.ASU 101: The ASU Experience Arizona State UniversityDR. CARLOCK: There’s a huge difference in quality between the two, believe me. That’s why I suggested you go to the library.SLIDE 4:ANNA: I guess I should have done that. I just didn’t think there was much of a difference between what they’d have and what I could get by Googling.DR. CARLOCK: One of the real differences between the two is that, while Google gives you lots of great stuff, it doesn’t always give you the strong, authoritative material you need in order to write a good paper. Library databases are filled with the stuff you need to write an “A” paper.SLIDE 5:NARRATOR: Let’s take a moment and examine what Anna did when searching for sources for her paper. If her topic was “cyberbullying” and she typed it into Google, she’d get a results list that looked something like this.SLIDE 6:NARRATOR: To be fair, some of these look pretty good. But upon closer examination, it isn’t necessarily so. The first site listed wants you to donate to their cause. The second one has a cute video for you to watch. The bottom site isanother one with a video- your instructor wants you to site articles, not watch videos! That leaves Wikipedia. Wikipedia’s a good place to get an overview of your topic, isn’t it?SLIDE 7:NARRATOR: Not so fast. Take a look at the warnings that accompany a Wikipedia entry. This entry says it needs verification. That there may be unverified claims. That the entry doesn’t present a complete worldview on the topic. So is this an appropriate resource to use in a college-level research paper? Not as your only source…SLIDE 8:ASU 101: The ASU Experience Page 2ANNA: So when I use the library, what should I be looking for? Something in particular?DR. CARLOCK: Sure. You should start by trying to find something on your topic that gives you a balanced look at both sides. That way you’ll have a good overview of what you are talking about as you begin searching for articles that support your thesis.SLIDE 9:NARRATOR: The Libraries’ databases have sources that are both authoritative AND that are objective or neutral. For example, the database CQ Researcher presents a neutral look at multiple sides of a topic. Plus it has a bibliography that might lead you to other sources to use for your paper. If you look to the left of the screen you’ll see the amazing amount of material one of these articles can contain, including things like pros and cons, an outlook, and more!SLIDE 10:ANNA: So that’s all I need? Sounds pretty simple.DR. CARLOCK: Not quite. Just using one resource isn’t enough. You should definitely try and find more articles on your topic through a database like Academic Search Premier. That’s how you’ll get the best stuff.SLIDE 11:NARRATOR: It’s easy to get to the Libraries’ databases from on or off campus. First, click on one of the “research databases” links on the library home page.SLIDE 12:NARRATOR: Find a database by its name, by its general subject, or use one of the frequently used resources in the grey box on the right. In fact, that’s where you’d find Academic Search Premier!ASU 101: The ASU Experience Page 3SLIDE 13:NARRATOR: Your third and final click takes you through to search the database. Searching a database like Academic Search Premier is easy, and it has articles on all topics.SLIDE 14:NARRATOR: If Anna were to type in “cyberbullying”, she’d get a result that looked like this You can see here that she got a wonderful variety of articles to use for her paper. SLIDE 15:NARRATOR: Long articles…SLIDE 16:NARRATOR: Short articles… SLIDE 17:NARRATOR: Articles from popular magazines you see on supermarket and bookstore shelves…SLIDE 18: NARRATOR: Articles from newspapers…SLIDE 19:NARRATOR: And articles from journals you’ll only see in a university library. SLIDE 20:ASU 101: The ASU Experience Page 4NARRATOR: Best of all, many articles that immediately give you access to free full text. Just what you’re looking for!SLIDE 21:ANNA: Thank you, Dr. Carlock. I’ll go back and get restarted on my paper.DR. CARLOCK: You’re welcome, Anna. As long as you get started using the libraries’ databases to find some articles, you’ll be on the right track. And if you have trouble, tell me. Or better yet- ask a librarian.SLIDE 22:NARRATOR: Remember, no one is asking you to stop Googling. However, in order to achieve the best possible grades, you’re going to have to go a step further. That means using the ASU Libraries!ASU 101: The ASU Experience Page
