English 1301 – Composition ISyllabusInstructor: Stephen SandersTerm: Fall 2011School Phone: 806.894.8515Email Address: [email protected] Hours/Tutorial Times: M – F: 7:40 – 8:00 AM; B Lunch; 3:10 – 4:00 PM Scope/PurposeThe purpose of English 1301 is to help students understand and apply thestandards of correctness in formal thought and the written English language.English 1301 helps students to think well by teaching them to read and writewell through its focus on the writing process, on the use of appropriategrammar and diction, on the use of logic, and on the different methods ofessay development. Collateral readings from all areas of the humanities areincluded.Required Texts1. Kirszner and Mandell. Patterns for College Writing. 11th Ed. Bedford/St. Martin's.2. Hacker. A Writer's Reference. 7th Ed. Bedford/St. Martin's.3. Collegiate Dictionary (such as Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary)Requirements1. Students will demonstrate a successful understanding and use of grammar, organization, logic, and various models of discourse.2. Students will read, discuss, and demonstrate understanding of a variety of readings from a variety of sources.Methods of Evaluation1. Students will complete six 500 – 800 word essays to be graded according to the requirements in this syllabus.2. Students will complete various assignments to assess understanding of class readings and discussions (written assignments, quizzes, exams).Composition Requirements1. All compositions must successfully use the conventions of standard grammar.2. All compositions must be properly developed.3. All compositions must be properly unified and coherent.4. All compositions must properly utilize logic, facts, and argumentation to advance its thesis.Composition Foci:1. Central Idea2. Organization3. Sentence Structure4. Diction5. Mechanics6. Creativity/OriginalityGradesDaily Grades (1 grade): homework, classwork, quizzes, preliminary essay workMajor Grades (2 grades): finished essays, examsLate WorkAll late work will have 20 points subtracted from its score for every day the assignment is late.Due DatesAll essays, quizzes and exams missed because of an excused absence must be made up before or after school within the make-up time as determined by L.H.S. policy.EssaysAll essays (planning work, rough drafts, and final drafts) are due on the dates on the course calendar. No final draft of an essay will be accepted without its planning work and rough draft.QuizzesQuizzes may be either scheduled or unscheduled. Please be prepared for them by paying attention, taking notes, participating in discussions, and successfully completing your assignments.ExamsExams are scheduled on the calendar and may either be objective or subjective.Grading PolicyA = 90 – 100B = 80 – 89C = 70 – 79 (Class credit is only given for a grade of “C” or above.)F = 69 or below Absence/Tardy PolicyStudents in English 1301 are expected to be on time. Five minutes is far more than enough time to get from class to class at Levelland High School, so tardies will not be taken lightly. Expect consequences if you are tardy.Even though this is a South Plains College dual credit course, we meet on Levelland High School's daily schedule. Therefore, this class will follow Levelland High School's attendance policy. Cell Phone PolicyCell phones are not allowed in class. This means no texting, calling, surfing, or even checking the time during class. Any student using his/her cell phone during class will get a single warning to put the phone away; if the phone is used again during class, then it will be taken up. It would be best for you to turn your cell phone off before you get to class.Students with DisabilitiesStudents with disabilities, including but not limited to physical, psychiatric, or learning disabilities, who wish to request accommodations in this class should notify the Levelland High School administration and/or counselors early in the semester so that appropriate arrangements may be made.Statement of NondiscriminationIt is the policy of this instructor not to discriminate on the basis of age, color, disability, ethnicity, gender, national origin, race, religion, or sexual orientation. The attempt of any student to present as his or her own any work which he or she has not honestly performed is regarded by the faculty and administration as a most serious offense and renders the offender liable to serious consequences. . .”(South Plains College General Catalog)“Except in extreme cases, disciplinary action in cases of cheating or plagiarism will be handled by and at the discretion of the instructor and, if necessary, in consultation with the departmental chairperson. Depending on the nature and the severity of the problem, individual instructors may assign penalties from zero for the assignment to an “F” in the course. Extreme cases may result in disciplinary action up to and including expulsion from South Plains College.”(SPC Student Guide, SPC General Catalog)Syllabus CalendarAll the due dates for work are on the course calendar. And, while the due dates probably will not be moved, the teacher reserves the right to make changes to the calendar because of unforeseen events and the havoc they might wreak upon the schedule. In most cases, though, refer to the calendar for the dates assignments are due. If you don't know the day any given assignment is due, then ask the teacher.Grades: Due to privacy concerns, the teacher will not discuss grades through email. If you would like to talk about your grades, please make an appointment for this purpose.
