Online courses are not for everyone. Online course students need a beginning knowledge of technology skills and access to a computer with reliable Internet connectivity for those courses. It is especially important that online course students possess and exercise the self-discipline necessary to work independently and to create time to complete assignments and meet deadlines without a consistent class meeting schedule. Office Hours: Tuesday : 9:00am - noon Wednesday : 9:00am - noon and 1:00pm - 2:00pm Thursday : 9:00am - noon Students may also arrange to meet with the instructor by appointment. Students are encouraged to contact the instructor via e-mail. Teaching Assistants are also available to assist students with each project. Course Description: Survey of information systems use in organizations and the information technologies used to implement them. Scope includes hardware, software and telecommunications concepts. Projects stress the use of computer applications to support decision making, written communications and oral communication. Text: Management Information Systems, 9th Ed. by McLeod and Schell Course Objectives: To provide an introduction to systems and development concepts, information technology, and application software. Students will learn how information is used in an organization and how information systems enable quality improvement, timeliness, and competitive advantage. Course Procedures: You are required to have a current UNCW computer account and you should frequently check that account for e-mail. Check the instructor’s Web site frequently. If you do not check the instructor’s Web site frequently you should expect your grade to suffer. Students may bring one 8½" by 11" page study sheet to each exam. You may put any material you wish on that study sheet. Any student caught cheating will be subject to the disciplinary provisions in the Student Handbook and Code of Student Life. Only university approved excuses will be accepted for missing a project or an exam. If you are unable to complete the project at the scheduled time, make arrangements with the professor before the project is due. Projects turned in late will be penalized approximately one letter grade per day. [note: this is an online class, it will only meet for the first day of classes and for Exam I and Exam II]Grading: (250 point total) Letter Grade: 50 Points - projects A - 225 or more points 100 Points - Exam I B - 200 or more points 100 Points - Exam II C - 175 or more points D - 150 or more points The class schedule below shows the weeks of this semester and also the chapters and course content presented during those weeks.
