This course will focus on 2- or 3-dimensional projects in a special topics area. Emphasis is on individual expression. This course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary. (2 Lec., 4 Lab.) Coordinating Board Academic Approval Number 5004015326 COURSE TOPICS: Painting subjects may include color theory, still life, landscape and urban space, portrait, the human figure, abstraction, mixed media, installation, and thematic series. All classes in the Eastfield College Visual Arts Program have rigorous intellectual and aesthetic expectations. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students produce a portfolio of paintings which should demonstrate: - individual expression - exploration of themes and issues in contemporary painting - continuing skill development in the manipulation of painting media, art elements and design principles - the development of an individual series of drawings and a paintings - critical thinking skills in the area of aesthetics as it pertains to painting and its historical context SUPPLIES REQUIRED: If you do not already own the paint and brushes you need, purchase all of the paints, brushes, and miscellaneous supplies in the acrylic or oil painting kit for Painting I ARTS 2316.4001 NO LATER THAN Saturday, January 21. In addition to the above, you will need canvases or heavy paper such as Lennox (gessoed if you are using oil) or masonite or other wood supports from an art supply store (see course outline). Borrowing is not allowed. Kits for Painting I are sold at Asel Art Supply on Cedar Springs in Dallas. eCAMPUS SITE FOR THIS COURSE: The syllabus, project examples, and course announcements are posted on the eCampus site for the course. Check eCampus EVERY week. SYLLABUS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AND ATTENDANCE CERTIFICATION – Attend the first day of class! By signing the contract attached to the syllabus, you acknowledge that you understand the syllabus as well as the academic and behavioral requirements of this course. On the 12th class day, all teachers certify attendance in their classes, and this can affect Financial Aid awards. See additional info later in syllabus.2 ATTENDANCE POLICY: - If you arrive late, take a long break, leave early, or miss a class, your grade will be affected. - The number of minutes you miss will be recorded and totaled at the end of the semester. - If you arrive without the art supplies required for the class session, you will be counted absent. - To be counted present, you must do the project as assigned using the correct materials for the whole class. - No absence is excused. - Always email the instructor BEFORE you miss a class. If you miss a formal project critique, you will receive a zero = F for the project, even if you completed it. If you disrupt the class repeatedly and/or are regularly uncooperative, your semester grade will be F. If you miss 7 or more classes or enough time to equal that, your semester grade will be F. If you miss 6 classes or enough time to equal that, you semester grade will drop 3 full letter grades. If you miss 5 classes or enough time to equal that, you semester grade will drop 2 full letter grades. If you miss 4 classes or enough time to equal that, your semester grade will drop 1 full letter grade. If you miss 0 - 3 classes, your grade will not be lowered. EVALUATION: The following criteria will be used to measure student achievement: NO LATE WORK IS ACCEPTED. WORK NOT PRESENTED FOR CRITIQUE ON TIME WILL RECEIVE A ZERO = F. Portfolio of In-Class Assignments = 75% This artwork is produced during regular class sessions, so ATTENDANCE IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE! Homework (average of all homework assignments) = 15% This artwork is produced outside of regular class time and must be submitted at next class for grading. Portfolio and Homework Grades are based on Technical and Conceptual Skills - Technical Skills o Mastery of media –acrylic or oil paint, thinning and paint body media, brushes, surfaces o Mastery of techniques—line, glazing, scumbling, impasto, wet in wet, direct painting, layers - Conceptual Skills o Mastery of gesture, form, value, linear and aerial perspective, composition, color theory Attitude about Learning, Work Ethic and Extra Effort, Behavior, Critique Participation = 10% GRADING SCALE: A = 91-100: Exceptional/outstanding work, demonstrating high technical, conceptual, and creative skills. B = 81-90: Very good work, demonstrating above average technical, conceptual, and creative skills. C = 71-80: Adequate/Average work, demonstrating average technical, conceptual, and creative skills. D = 61-70: Below average work, demonstrating limited technical, conceptual, and creative skills. F = 0-60: Unsatisfactory work, demonstrating little or no technical, conceptual, and creative skill. COURSE TIME COMMITMENT: Early in the semester, allow time to learn how to use the media and methods specific to this course. Even if you are very comfortable with art media, this course will provide challenges. Spend your time wisely. Expect to spend 6 hours per week outside of class time on this course in order to: - Complete unfinished class work - Complete homework assignments and special projects - Prepare your work for critiques3 COURSE CALENDAR: The instructor reserves the right to amend (revise) the course syllabus at any time, as necessary!
