UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA College of Engineering Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Last modified on January 30, 2005 by Bill Tsang (ctsang@eecs) Borivoje Nikolic Lab #2: Layout Editing with Virtuoso EECS 141 1. Objective This semester we are using a layout tool from Cadence called Virtuoso. The purpose of this lab is to familiarize you with the nuances of this software and to work out any "tools" problems with both Virtuoso and Exceed. 2. Tasks • The first thing you must do is make sure your account has been configured to use the Cadence software: o Start Exceed on the Windows/local machine. o Change Exceed display settings on the Windows machine (see TA). (Tools -> Config -> Other Server Settings Maximum Backing Store: Always Default Backing Store: When Mapped Minimum Backing Store: When Mapped) o Log in to c199, cory, quasar or pulsar. Make sure you enable tunneling first. o Use TCshell: c199% tcsh c199% source ~ee141/cadencesetup/ee141.cdssetup • Create an directory for your EE141 work in your root path: c199% mkdir ~/ee141 • Create a directory inside the ee141 folder called lab2: c199% mkdir ~/ee141/lab2 • Copy the display.drf, .cdsinit, .cdsenv, .cdsplotinit files to your ee141 folder (Only do this once): c199% cp ~ee141/display/display.drf ~/ee141/ c199% cp ~ee141/cadencesetup/.cdsinit ~/ee141/ c199% cp ~ ee141/cadencesetup/.cdsenv ~/ee141/ c199% cp ~ ee141/cadencesetup/.cdsplotinit ~/ee141/ • Also in ~/ee141 create a text file called cds.lib with the following two lines of text: DEFINE NCSU_TechLib_tsmc03d /usr/eesww/cadence/NCSU_CDK/lib/NCSU_TechLib_tsmc03d INCLUDE /usr/eesww/cadence/NCSU_CDK/cdssetup/cds.lib (make sure you put each command on its own line with no line-breaks within each command, and put at least one blank line at the end of the file) • Save cds.lib. • Type icfb & in the ~/ee141 directory at the command prompt to start Cadence. IMPORTANT: Always switch to the ~/ee141 before you start Cadence. • In this first software lab, all you have to do is run the tutorial you can find here: http://bwrc.eecs.berkeley.edu/Classes/ICDesign/EE141_s06/SoftwareLabs/Lab2/VirtuosoTutorial.htmThis will familiarize you with Virtuoso’s basic editing and interface procedures. • Create a layout plot of the design. You will need to print out a copy of the top view (the row cell). To print your layout: o In the Layout window go to Design -> Plot -> Submit o Click on Plot Options at the bottom of the menu o Select Encapsulated PS (EPS) in the Plotter name field o Click on “Send plot only to file” and give a filename (e.g. plot.ps) o OK o Use gs plot.ps to preview your printout o ftp plot.ps to your Windows account or print directly from UNIX using: lp -d printer_name plot.ps • Ask you lab TA for further assistance or updates with printing issues. 3. What To Turn In (Due 1 week after the lab, in your next lab session) This particular lab is not very demanding. To get credit for the lab, all you have to do is to be there and turn in the printout of the cell
