Attendance Policy As per college and departmental policy, the instructor is allowed to withdraw a student when that student’s absences exceed the number of times the class meets weekly. See current GCC student Handbook for complete absence policy Grading procedure There will be five tests this semester. Tests and test questions may vary to include short answer, multiple choice, true-false, matching column, identification/definition, and essay. Test items will include both textbook and lecture material. Take home tests are due within one week after being given. If not turned in on that date, 20% will be subtracted from the test score. After one week, no credit will be given for that test. See student handbook for current policy on cheating or plagiarism. The ;points on the test vary from 54 to 93 depending on the unit we have covered.. There will also be extra credit offered this semester Grading 90-100=A 89- 80=B 70- 79=C 69- 60=D Classroom Etiquette Please turn off pagers and cell phones and any other electronic device and keep from view. Assignment: Chapters 1&2 August 31-September 2 Start Colonization Period. Assignment: Chapters 3,4,5 pages 82-94, short video on Jamestown September 7 (Labor Day) 9 Conclude Colonization period. Assignment for next week will be test on Chapters 1-4 and materials covered in class. Also Chapter 5 pages 82-94. September 14-16 Start background to the American Revolution. Show last half of video 1776. Assignment: Chapter 5,6,7, Receive tests on Chapters 1-4. Also Chapter 5 pages 82-94. September 21-23 Conclude the background to the American Revolution and start the Revolution. September 28-30 Cover Critical Period, Constitutional Period. Assignment: Chapter 8 Test on Chapters 5-7 following week. Washington, Jefferson and Nationalism, i.e., War 1812, Monroe Doctrine, American System, Decisions of the Marshall Court. November 2-4 Begin background to the Civil War: Assignment: Chapter 15 November 9-11 Civil War and the video Gettysburg. Assignment: Chapter 16 November 16-18 Reconstruction Assignment Chapter 17 November 23-25 Begin slides on Lincoln Future test on Lincoln will be in class – No notes November 30-December 2 Conclude slides on Lincoln December 7-9 In class we will analyze various theories on Lincoln’s assignation, Read “War Prayer” by Mark Twain and short test on Lincoln slides December 15 Final Exam will be Chapters 15, 16, 17 EXTRA CREDIT Format: 1. The paper is to be typed (word processed) or in ink if written long hand. 2. Minimum of two pages 3. Minimum of two sources, which may include the internet. No sources no Credit 4. Worth up to 20 points depending on the quality of the report 5. Only two extra credit reports Paper: You may select any topic or area from the Exploration Period through Reconstruction. Select a topic you know little about or one that has interested you for some time and wanted to know more about. If the topic warrants an evaluation, please do so. Example: Did the United States enter the Mexican War because of false ormisleading information? Also you may watch the following videos and work a two page summary in concluding your evaluation.
