BioS 101 9AM Lecture INFORMATION There is both Discussion and Lab in the first WEEK points Assignments for the Discussion and Laboratory are in your lab text spiral bound by Molumby and Murray UIC BioS 101 Nyberg Registration There are two BioS 101 classes each with many Disc lab sections The 9A lecture CRN 17100 is connected with labs that meet in 3098 SEL If your lab meets in 3084 SEL you should be registered for the 1P lecture CRN 17101 You can not attend a section other than the one you are registered for UIC BioS 101 Nyberg Sources of Information BioS 101 has greatly reduced paper usage The syllabus grading info lecture materials problem sets and most other information are posted on the course website http www uic edu classes bios bios101 nybergia htm Some of this material will also be on Blackboard Blackboard will be where your grade records are kept UIC BioS 101 Nyberg Organization Lecture is from 9 00 9 50 AM in 250 SES MWF each week The exams are given during the lecture hour in 250 SES Each week you have a one hour discussion and a 2 hr lab The Discussion and Laboratory are taught by a Teaching Assistant TA who is a graduate student UIC BioS 101 Nyberg Staff Professor Dennis Nyberg delivers the lectures and makes up the hour exams Dr Alan Molumby is lecture back up and is in charge of the course laboratory and Teaching Assistants Your teaching assistant runs the Discussion and Laboratory and maintains your grade records UIC BioS 101 Nyberg Lecture The lecture time will focus on learning to use the information you have learned from the assigned readings and the posted PowerPoint slides It is best to have studied the lecture slides BEFORE the lecture they are used Questions are encouraged but some may not be answered in lecture if too specialized Cell phones OFF and no talking during lecture Clickers are NOT required for 9A lecture UIC BioS 101 Nyberg Discussion Each Discussion begins with your turning in a sheet answering the questions for that week from your laboratory text The discussion sheets are worth 1 pt and form the basis for the Discussion period Discussions focus on preparing you to understand the laboratory that follows Discussion UIC BioS 101 Nyberg Laboratory Laboratories are 2 hours long Most labs involve working in pairs to make observations which are entered into a data sheet found in your lab book Completed data sheet are shown to the TA and you get a maximum of 3 points for the completed sheets Some labs have elaborate lab reports required UIC BioS 101 Nyberg Examinations There will be 3 hour exams Each hour exam will have 40 multiple choice questions Some questions require you to use disparate pieces of information to solve problems The Optional Final Examination will be given ONLY at the scheduled Final Exam time UIC BioS 101 Nyberg Problem Sets There are 3 problem sets one associated with each hour exam These problem sets prepare you to answer the kinds of questions that will be on the exams If you don t understand how to solve the problem seek help from class mates your TA or Prof Nyberg UIC BioS 101 Nyberg Grades GRADING is based on points earned There is a fixed grading scale The course will not be curved Grading on a fixed scale attempts to evaluate your mastery of the material rather than your position relative to other members of the class UIC BioS 101 Nyberg Getting Help Prof Nyberg s Office hours are M12 Tu2 and W10 in 3452 SES Your TA will have office hours Classmates are often able to explain information they have learned Honors College offers tutoring UIC BioS 101 Nyberg Accommodation Individuals requiring special accommodations must be registered with the UIC Disabilities Office Appropriate forms from the Disabilities Office should be brought to both Dr Nyberg and your TA prior to the end of the second week of class UIC BioS 101 Nyberg Absence Missed work can not be made up regardless of the reason work was missed including late registration except Individuals participating in UIC sponsored events may do lab on different day of the SAME week as that missed Take scheduled examinations early Optional final exam OFE will substitute for a single missed hour examination UIC BioS 101 Nyberg Computer software You don t like the way 101 information is displayed on your computer you have to figure out how to get the format the way you like it The BioS 101 staff are not computer experts Usually seeking formatting help from fellow students is effective UIC BioS 101 Nyberg Email Prof Nyberg s email is csnp uic edu You should use your UIC email account in corresponding with Prof Nyberg Please include your section TA Name day and hour DISC meets as well as your name when communicating Important information from the staff will be sent to your UIC email address be sure to check that account regularly if it is not your main email address UIC BioS 101 Nyberg Course Description Species concept natural selection phylogeny models of population growth transmission genetics allele frequency adaptation interactions among organisms in a community biomes climate ecosystem processes and human impacts on the environment UIC BioS 101 Nyberg COURSE OBJECTIVES Knowledge and understanding of species phylogeny DNA sequence analysis independent assortment linkage adaptation natural selection allele frequency ecology demography global change biogeochemical cycles ecological restoration Illinois natural areas Skills Simple statistics with excel graphing using excel Chi squared test writing laboratory reports population growth models UIC BioS 101 Nyberg Warning Population biology is inherently statistical and quantitative If you are not comfortable with algebra and creating graphs you should review those areas ASAP Early effort enables you to evaluate how much effort you will need to be successful Understanding populations is cumulative and it is very difficult to catch up once you fall behind UIC BioS 101 Nyberg
