Topics will include youth serving in social institutions of both a preventive and rehabilitative nature and issues related to alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs and their effects. At Risk Youth: A Comprehensive Response (4th ed.) McWhirter et. al ISBN 0-534-27236-3,2007 (Text-book buy back has to include all the original material purchased with the book i.e. Disk/CD activities.) 1. Student will be able to describe various aspects of at-risk behavior of children and adolescents. 2. Student will be able to identify educational, psychological, and counseling interventions for prevention and treatment of at risk adolescent behavior. 3. Student will be able to identify factors affecting physical and mental health of children and adolescents.Course Objectives: Evaluation Procedures: 1. To familiarized the students with a broad range of adolescent behavior that constitutes at-risk behavior. 2. To provide the students will the skills necessary to assess at-risk youth and to develop a plan of action which addresses the child’s needs. 3. To describe ethical and cultural issues crucial to the delivery of services to the at-risk youth. 4. To familiarize the student with different interventions approaches for at-risk youth. COURSE ASSIGNMENTS 1. PARTICIPATION and ATTENDANCE – Be prepared to discuss readings in class. 2. SELF -REFLECTION PAPER: Write a paper reviewing your experiences during adolescence. Your paper should address significant issues and life events that you experienced during adolescence and the effect these events and issues had on you at the time and may currently still have (Issues that should be addressed include environmental factors such as socioeconomic status, school factors, sexuality, sexual behavior, drugs and alcohol, peer pressure, antisocial or delinquent behavior, family dynamics, and emotional and psychological factors). Include the following questions: Describe any feeling, thoughts and/or behaviors during these moments? What would you tell your adolescent self about choices and the outcomes of those choices? Any tips, advice, or specific solutions you would give yourself to help your through any of these defining moments. The paper should be 2-4typed pages. 3. ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY: This is a formal bibliography that includes citations of sources with summary and evaluation information for each source. You will choose one of the At- Risk topics located in part 3 of your textbook. You will write an evaluative summary for each of the four professional scholarly journals that are related to your chosen topic. The paper should be 3 to 5 pages in length, doubled spaced and in APA format. (Spelling, grammar, neatness, structure, clarity and content will also be considered to determine the final grade.)Obtaining Final Course Grades Using eConnect Final Grade Reports are no longer mailed. Convenient access is available online at www.econnect.dcccd.edu. Use your identification number when you log onto eConnect, an online system developed by the DCCCD to provide you with timely information regarding your college record. Your grades will also be printed on your Student Advising Report, which is available in the Admissions Office. Papers are expected to be submitted with the correct grammar, spell checked and without typographical errors. All assignments must be submitted through ECAMPUS. Email assignments will not be accepted. TEST COVERAGE: 4. EXAM I - The exam will cover chapters 1 – 8, weekly lectures, in class videos and class discussions. (NO MAKE-UP TEST) 5. EXAM II - The exam will cover chapters 9-15, weekly lectures, in class videos and class discussions. (NO MAKE-UP TEST) All exams will be taken on ECAMPUS Note: Make up exams will be given only as a result of personal or medical emergencies and it must be documented. GRADES & POINTS A = 90 – 100 B = 80 – 89.9 C = 70 – 79.9 D = 60 – 69.9 F = 59.9 or below 15 points – Self-Reflection Paper 25 points – Annotated Bibliography 30 points – Exam I 30 points – Exams II________ 100 points totalLate assignments Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the date that is indicated on the course schedule section. All papers will lose 10 points if turned in the next class we meet. I will not accept any late papers after the next class period after the due date. In the event of an emergency it is your responsibility to leave me a message at (972) 391 - 1047 to avoid penalties. Course Outline: TDB Attendance Policy: Financial Aid Statement Students who are receiving any form of financial aid should check with the Financial Aid Office prior to withdrawing from classes. Withdrawals may affect your eligibility to receive further aid and could cause you to be in a position of repayment for the current semester. Students who fail to attend or participate after the drop date are also subject to this policy. Financial Aid Statement for Distance Learning Classes If you are receiving Financial Aid grants or loans and are enrolled in a Distance Learning class, you must show participation in this class prior to the certification date by either e-mailing or contacting the instructor or logging on to eCampus.
