You will actively learn Spanish vocabulary and grammatical structures; you will listen to real/life spoken Spanish and will learn cultural information about the different Spanish speaking countries. However, these objectives can only be realized through your active participation, both in and out of the class. Required Materials: - Textbook: Jose A. Blanco and Philip Redwine Donley, Vistas. Introducción a la lengua española. Third edition. Vista Higher Learning. 2008. - Workbook/VideoManual: Vistas. Third edition. Vista Higher Learning. 2008 - Lab Manual. Vistas. Third edition. Vista Higher Learning. 2008. - Passcode to the Vistas Maestro Supersite (vistas.vhlcentral.com) –free with the purchase of a new textbook - Fotonovela Video DVD. Free with the purchase of your book.Optional Material: English Grammar for Students of Spanish by Emily Spinelly. Spanish/English Dictionary. Material Description: Textbook. Vistas. Third edition: For in class use and daily study. Please, bring it to class every day! Workbook/Video Manual and Lab Manual with Answer Key: For daily at-home practice to be completed as soon as possible after class. I will collect the assigned sections of your Manual once each chapter is completed. You need to complete all the activities in a timely manner and correct your own answers with a pen orpencil of a different color to get full credit for it. I will take 3 points off for each day yourassignment is late. No assignments will be accepted more than two days after the due.You are allowed to miss one out of the 8 Manual chapters. Lab Audio Program: The Lab Audio Program provides focused listening practice that further develops pronunciation and speaking skills. These materials are necessary for completing the exercises in the Vocabulary sections of the textbook, which will be regularly assigned as homework. The program is available on the Vistas Maestro Supersite. Fotonovela Video DVD Free with the purchase of your book. Use at home for extra practice and review. You will need it to complete the activities in your Video Manual. Maestro Vistas Supersite Use at home if you have access to a computer with a CD drive or on campus. The passcode to the Supersite (vistas.vhlcentral.com) is free with the purchase of a new textbook. Here you will find activities from your textbook available with auto-grading capability, additional activities for practice and all the audio and video materials for the class. Some of these activities will be assigned as homework and some others as extra credit.How to approach each lesson: 1. Always begin with the assigned sections in the Textbook before coming to class. Prepare for them so you can discuss, ask questions and participate. 2. After the class review the materials covered and go to the Workbook/Video and Lab Manual. Complete all the activities in the assigned section for the day and then go back over them with a different colored pen and correct your work using the Answer Key. 3. Finally, explore the Vistas Maestro Supersite, which will help make learning Spanishfun and interactive –the assigned and extra credit activities in the supersite, as well asprofessor Gomez lectures, grammar tutorials, etc. Evaluation: - Chapter Exam (2 out of 3 x 250 points each) 500 points = 50 % - Final Exam (250) 250 points = 25 %- Class Participation 100 points = 10% - Workbook/Video Manual homework and Supersite activities 100 points = 10%- Lab Manual homework 50 points = 5% You can drop one out of the three chapter exams. No make-up exams will be provided. Final examination is mandatory. Grade Cutoffs: 90%-100% = A 80%-89% = B 70%-79% = C 60% to 69% = D below 60% = F Class participation Class attendance and regular participation are essential to succeed in this class. Attendance is essential in learning a foreign language! And, remember that, in accordance with college policy, you can be dropped for “excessive absence” (4 class meetings).Academic Honesty: According to college policy, if a student is discovered cheating the instructor will file an academic dishonesty report and fail that exam or assignment or even the entire course for everyone involved in the incident. Extra Credit: To get extra credit you can complete the extra activities assigned in the Vistas Maestro Supersite. Extra credit activities are due at the same time than the workbook/video and lab manual activities or each chapter. Late extra credit activities will receive only partial credit. Tips: - Come to class every day and be as well prepared as possible. Try not to miss any class session! It will be much harder to try to catch up on your own!- Keep up with the exercises in the Workbook/Video and Lab Manual. Do all the assigned section on a daily basis. Study the corresponding section in your textbook first, then move on to the exercises in your workbook and do them without referring to the answer key and, finally, correct your answers against the key using a different color pen. If you do not understand why you got it wrong, mark it and don’t forget toask me in class.- Turn in all your homework on time. It is 15 per cent of your grade and it is also thebest way to review and practice before each chapter exam. - Make sure you work with your practice exams and don’t miss the review sessions before every chapter exam. - Don’t hesitate to ask questions in, before, or after class and visit me during office hours.- Make friends with your classmates and exchange phone numbers.
