NMSU – College of Business – MBA Assessment Report – 2008-09 Brief Page 1 NMSU College of Business Master of Business Administration (MBA) Program Assessment Report Brief Summary with Program Improvement Suggestions for 2008-09 Student Learning Outcomes Assessment Dates Assessment Summary of Findings Use of Findings for Program Improvement 1 COMM write Fall 2008; Spring 2009 47 students and 31 students, respectively, wrote a memo as part of a business plan project for ACCT 503 Accounting for Managers. Assessed on convention, clarity, and rhetorical choices Fall 2008 results indicated less than 80% were competent in convention (76%) and clarity (72%) and rhetorical choices (74%). In spring 2009, all students were competent or accomplished in convention (94%), clarity (85%), and rhetorical choices (82%) Graduate committee will address options: require writing portion of GMAT, additional writing course for students showing writing deficiency, expanding writing requirements in MBA courses. 1 COMM oral Fall 2008; Spring 2009 12 and 11 students respectively made formal presentations in BA 590 Professional Paper and Presentation. Less than 80% were competent in eye contact (75%) and elocution (75%) in fall 2008 and in eye contact (55%) in spring 2009. Students will be videotaped during live presentation to committee members in BA 590 2 THINK Spring, 2009 29 students in MKT 503 analyzed marketing cases. Scored on ability to analyze situation, define problem, provide alternative solutions, and make a decision. Less than 80% were competent in analyzing situation (79%) and providing alternative solutions (76%) but were more than competent in defining problem (83%) and making a decision (90%) Course instructor will redesign requirements for the cases where most difficulties occurred. 3 QUANT Spring 2009 58 students answered an open-ended exam question in FIN 503. Students were asked to calculate an interest rate using the appropriate formula and provide an answer with support. Less than 80% could translate and apply (53%), analyze (52%), and communicate results (42%). Also difference across the three sites. Course instructors will change student learning experience so that all students will be able to solve problems using either a formula or a financial calculator. No program changes are associated with these findings. 5 ETHICS Will be assessed in 2009-10 6 LEGAL Fall 2008 44 students in BLAW 502 selected an article involving a legal issue, identified a relevant legal issue, discussed both sides of the issue, and reflected on the issue and provided a conclusion. More than 80% were competent in all traits; identifying a legal issue (86%), discuss/analyze (95%), and providing an opinion (93%). No program changes are associated with these
