The technique and handling of the device is the same as for a common otoscope examination. A computer interface, analogous to a digital camera, allows uploading of the images to the computer as digital picture files. The software can perform various image processing and analysis techniques to aid in the diagnosis of common ear ailments. The ability to take pictures improves upon the conventional otoscope, which simply consists of a light and lenses for magnification. This has significance in both the bioinformatics and telemedicine fields of biomedical technology. As the medical community continues to embrace the electronic age, digital devices will more heavily dominate physician offices and hospitals. Otoscopes are essential diagnostic devices for checking for ear abnormalities and disorders. The digital otoscope is a product that updates traditional diagnostic procedures, making them more effective at recording, sharing, and analyzing data, while easing the transition to modern technologies. This report contains all essential design aspects for creating the digital otoscope.iiTABLE OF CONTENTSABSTRACT....................................................................................................................................IILIST OF TABLES.........................................................................................................................VLIST OF FIGURES.....................................................................................................................VIINTRODUCTION.........................................................................................................................1BACKGROUND INFORMATION.......................................................................................................1MARKETING OVERVIEW...............................................................................................................1OVERALL PRODUCT REQUIREMENTS...............................................................................3OVERALL PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS..............................................................................4APPROACH TO OVERALL DESIGN.......................................................................................5DESIGN PLAN..............................................................................................................................8OVERVIEW....................................................................................................................................8IMAGE CAPTURE MODULE.........................................................................................................11OPTICAL RELAY MODULE..........................................................................................................11Viewer Eyepiece Module.......................................................................................................12Beam Splitter Module............................................................................................................13Telescope Module..................................................................................................................14LAMP AND LIGHTING MODULE..................................................................................................15LAMP POWER SUPPLY MODULE.................................................................................................16Battery Recharge Module......................................................................................................17Battery Indicator Module......................................................................................................18Voltage Regulation Module...................................................................................................20IMAGE PRE-PROCESSING MODULE.............................................................................................21DIMENSIONALITY REDUCTION MODULE....................................................................................22Principal Components Analysis Module...............................................................................23Feature Extraction Module...................................................................................................23FEATURE ANALYSIS MODULE.....................................................................................................23KEY COMPONENT
