Lecture Notes and Scientific American Articles to be supplied.COURSE REQUIREMENTS200 Midterm Exams (100 points)75 Section Scientific American Summaries/Quizzes: 30 pointsPresentation: 25 pointsParticipation: 20 points150 Final Exam (comprehensive)__________________________________________________________________425 TOTAL POINTS POSSIBLEEXAMSThe midterms in this class are given on the Tuesdays of week 4 and week 7 inclass. They will cover the material from lectures, the readings, and the discussionsections. The exams will contain multiple choice and short answer questions.The final exam is comprehensive and will also include questions based ondiscussion sections.Make-up exams are NOT given. If you are unable to take an examination or havean illness or other emergency, you are responsible for contacting the LifeSciences Core Office (LS Building, Room 2305, 825-6614) BEFORE theexamination. You are required to have written verification regarding the illnessor emergency. If you feel that a clerical error was made in grading your exam,submit your exam with a typed explanation of the issue to your teaching assistantor the Life Science Core Office by the Friday of the week following the examsreturn. Exams will not be regraded for content. Late regrades will not beaccepted.THE LIFE SCIENCE CORE OFFICEFor any administrative problems relating to this course, see Tammy Johnson orMark Gray in the Life Sci Core Office in Life Sci 2305, 825-6614. They will beable to assist you with copies of lecture handouts, scheduling difficulties, or otherLS Core class matters.Discussion Section• Discussion sections will include debates on controversial scientific issues, review of classmaterial, TA instruction, and class presentations. Participation points will be awarded soattendance is in your best interest.• Scientific American articles will be supplied as supplemental material for the debates.Papers summarizing the material or quizzes on the material will due in class on the day of thedebates.• Papers will be no less than 1 and no more than 2-pages in length and are worth 10 points.You will receive more specific instructions on each writing assignment. You must turnin these papers in person during the section they are due or you will lose two points.Also, for each additional day they are late you will lose another point. Your TA will notbe allowed to make any exceptions to these rules.• Quizzes will be worth 10 points and will begin promptly 5 minutes after the beginning ofthe discussion section. These points can not be made up if the discussion section ismissed.• Presentations are worth 25 points. 15 points will be awarded for the written report, 10 pointsfor the oral presentation.
