credit next week We will begin You must use your own iClicker If you are found to be using the iClicker of another person enrolled in this section it will be confiscated and your actions will be taken to be a violation of the rules covering academic honesty 4 Physics Learning Center The PLC is in BPS 1248 details and schedule on the website Limited TA support for this course 2 specific Tas 7h each addtl TA for 231 232 p learning g center not a helproom p TAs will The PLC is a cooperative encourage group work and will help groups when they are stuck Group work has been proven to be a very effective learning tool for strong and weak students students You must do your own assignments and you still must learn how to do problems on your own Don t do everything in groups g on your y own as much as you y can before working g Do assignments in the group PREPARE 5 Extra Credit Group Work Project Good option for students who feel they would benefit from structured group work Sign up by Friday Friday midnight Jan 14 on the course website Brief summary of requirements Meet once a week with an assigned group of fellow PHY231 students 3 5 in PLC Required to prepare for meeting Do homework as much as possible Work on assigned homework problem Discuss course contents and fill out a form at the meeting that provides feedback for the course so not just homework Self grading of preparation level 1 extra credit can miss 2 meetings at most 6 How to succeed in Physics 231 Read the book before coming to class Some quizzes will be on the reading material even material that has not been covered in class material class We encourage you to participate in a Learning group project in which you will be paired up with other students in study groups To obtain the extra credit you will need to meet with your study group once a week in the PLC PLC during which you will discuss and develop strategies for solving the homework problems Details about the signup will be sent to your registered email address this week week Recognize that learning physics is different than many other subjects There isn t much emphasis on memorization memorizing facts and homework problems is less useful than in many other courses courses The key is to learn to recognize physical principals that are important for specific problems and to use that knowledge to select the appropriate general techniques to solve them them You need to read the chapter and understand the principles before attempting the problems You Y need d to try the h problems bl yourself lf don t d just j follow f ll the h hints hi andd suggestions of your classmates Little is learned by copying or memorizing the solution of another student Chapter 1 Main points p Use SI units Mass kilograms kg g meters m Length Time seconds s Units and unit conversions Use of dimensional or unit analysis y to check answers Significant figures Coordinate system displacement and velocity Basic units and dimensions dimension symbol English unit SI conversion Length L Inch in Meter m 39 37 in m Time T Second s Second s Example E l 1 unit it conversions i Mary is 66 inches high What is her height in meters Example E l 2 2 John s room measures 9 ft by 12 ft What is the area of his room in m2 Note m2 means square meter Thinking about dimensions The equation Th ti v v0 mv2 v velocity distance time l it di t ti m s v0 velocity
