Prerequisites: CHE2200 and CHE2200LCourse Description: Students are introduced to organic chemistry according to family, with integration of aliphatic and aromatic compounds. The basic interdependence of properties and structure is demonstrated using a mechanistic approach. This course is offered in the Fall semester only. Course Objectives: 1. Students are introduced to the concept of organic functional groups. 2. Students are introduced to the nomenclature, classification, structure, and properties of organic compounds 3. Students will learn the principle reactions and the syntheses of organic molecules 4. Students will study the relationships between reactivity, functional group and acid or basic nature 5. Students will develop underlying principles that will allow them to understand and predict reactions Disabled Student Services: Students with disabilities who believe that they may need accommodations in this class should immediately contact the Academic Support Services/ADA Coordinator at 301-934-2251, ext. 7614. Course Requirements and Grading: Quizzes: There will be eight quizzes given during the semester. The dates of the quizzes are on the Tentative Assignment Schedule below. Each quiz will cover the material from the previous chapter(s) as specified on the Assignment Schedule . The questions or problems on the quizzes will resemble the problems worked in class and assigned for homework. You may bring one 8.5x11 sheet of paper with the periodic table on it to each quiz. As in CHE1200 and CHE1210, you may write any notes you wish on the front and back of that sheet of paper. The quizzes will be given at the beginning of class and will be timed, so it is to your advantage to be on time for class. Extra time will not be given to complete a quiz nor will makeup quizzes be given. Any missed quiz counts as a zero. Each quiz is worth 20 points and your total quiz grade will reflect the best 6 out of 8 quizzes from the semester. Homework: There will be nine homework assignments given online via Sapling Learning. Each homework assignment will cover one chapter in the text (except assignment #7 which covers chapters 20 and 21) and will be due after all of the assigned chapter material has been covered. Unlike last semester, you will only have 5 attempts to answer each homework problem. Please see the Tentative Assignment Schedule below for the exact homework due dates. All homework is due at 11PM on the due date. Extensions will not be given and late work will not be accepted. If you have not submitted your homework assignment online, the assignment will automatically submit when the due date is reached. You will receive a homework grade based on the work completed by the due date. Homework assignments will be reported as a grade out
