1 Eastfield College College Readiness Division Spring 2011, Semester SYLLABUS: College Algebra Math 1314 Section:4505 3-Credit Hours This class meets in room C305 on Monday evening only, beginning August 29, 2011, and ending December 15, 2011, from 7:05 PM until 9:55 PM. Instructor: Dr. Timothy Lo Contact Information: Office: C306 Office Hours: M-F 11:00am-12:00pm, others by appointment Phone: (972) 860-7675 Email Address: [email protected] CATALOG: Prerequisite: Two years of high school algebra and an appropriate assessment score or Developmental Mathematics 0099 or Development Mathematics 0093. This course is a study of relations and functions including polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and special functions. Other topics include complex numbers, systems of equations and inequalities, theory of equations, progressions, the binomial theorem, proofs, and applications. TEXTBOOK: College Algebra, Blitzer, Pearson (5th Edition), 2010 ISBN: 032-1-666-100. Mymathlab Course ID:lo23599 CALCULATOR: A graphing calculator is required for all College Algebra Courses or above. You may choose your own graphing calculator model; however, TI 83 or TI 84 version is preferred. Graphing Calculators may not be allowed during some examinations. However, you may use scientific calculators that do not have the graphing capabilities. GRADING POLICY: Your course grade will be based on four midterm exams, take-home assignments (and unannounced quizzes), each being 15% of the total grade. A comprehensive departmental final exam will be 25% of total grade. All take-home assignments are to be answered on a scantron unless otherwise instructed. These assignments are due within a week and corrections are allowed once. Simply resubmit on the back of the original scantron and mark ALL questions. No notes, books, cell phones, graphing calculators are allowed during exam. There is no makeup to any exam unless arrangement is made before the exam. Exam dates will be announced in class. GRADING RATIONALE: For a semester average from: Course Grade is: 90-100 A 80-89 B 70-79 C 60-69 D Below 60 F2 FINAL EXAMINATION: A comprehensive, departmental final examination, which will represent at least 25% of the class grade, will be administered in all College Algebra classes. POLICY ON MISSED TESTS AND ASSIGNMENTS: Make-up examinations or quizzes will not be given. Notify the instructor in advance if absence is inevitable. GRADE REPORT: Grade reports are no longer mailed. Convenient access is available online. Just use your student identification number when you log onto e-Connect at http://econnect.dcccd.edu/. Grade information can only be discussed in person with instructor. DROP DATE: Last date to drop with a grade of “W” is 11/17/2011. ATTENDANCE POLICY: You are expected to regularly attend all classes in which you are enrolled. Students have the responsibility to attend class and to consult with the instructor when an absence occurs. (2004-2006 Dallas County Community College District Catalog, page 58) Students are expected to attend regularly all classes in which they are enrolled. If you are unable to complete a course (or courses) in which you are enrolled, it is your responsibility to withdraw from the course by the appropriate date. If you do not withdraw, you will receive a performance grade, usually a grade of “F”. Students who are absent from class for the observance of a religious holiday may take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time after the absence, if not later that the 15th day of the semester, the student notified the instructor(s) that the student would be absent for a religious holiday. Sec. 51.511 TX Educ. Code. Students who are receiving any form of financial aid should check with the Financial Aid Office prior to withdrawing from classes. Withdrawals may affect your eligibility to receive further aid and could cause you to be a position of repayment for the current semester. Students who fail to attend or participate after the drop date are also subject to this policy. If a student is unable to complete a course (or courses) in which he/she is registered, it is the responsibility of the student to withdraw from the course by the appropriate date. (The date is published in the academic calendar each year and in each semester’s class schedule). If a student does not withdraw, he/she will receive a performance grade, usually a grade of “F”. Sec. 51.911 TX Educ. Code. DROP POLICY: To drop a class or withdraw from the college, students must follow the prescribed procedure. It is the student’s responsibility to drop or withdraw. Failure to do so will result in receiving a performance grade, usually grade of “F”. No drop or withdrawal requests are accepted by telephone. Students who drop a class or withdraw from the College before the semester deadline receive a “W” (Withdraw) in each class dropped. The deadline for receiving a “W” is indicated on the academic calendar and the current class schedule. If you are unable to complete this course, you must withdraw from it by 11/17/2011. For more information, contact the Admissions/Registrar’s Office at 972-860-7167 (Room C 119.)3 STOP BEFORE YOU DROP SIX DROP RULE: For students who enrolled in college level courses for the first time in the fall of 2007, Texas Education Code 51.907 limits the number of courses a student may drop. You may drop no more than 6 courses during your entire undergraduate career, unless the drop qualifies as an exception. Your campus counseling/advising center will give you more information on the allowable exceptions. Remember that once you have accumulated 6 non-exempt drops you cannot drop any
