Last Day to Drop with a W: April 12. PHED 1164 Catalog Description: Students are introduced to wellness-related concepts and activities for the purpose of gaining knowledge and skills necessary to evaluate personal fitness level and to develop a personal lifelong fitness program. Activities include, but are not limited to: aerobic activities, circuit training, muscular strength and endurance development, flexibility, weight training and body composition. Recommended Text: Fitness and Wellness by Hoeger and Hoeger (Eighth or Ninth Edition) ISBN# 9780495388401 Prerequisite: Developmental Reading 0093 or English as a Second Language (ESOL) 0044 or have met the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) standard in Reading. Student Learning Outcomes: 1. Students demonstrate improvement in their fitness level as measured by their fitness scores. 2. Students design an appropriate program of fitness for future fitness and wellness. Instructional Methods will include lecture and laboratory. Attire Appropriate workout clothing including shorts, shirt, and athletic shoes must be worn during class time. A towel should also be brought to the workout each session to place on the benches during work and to place on the mats during abdominal work. Evaluation Procedures may include but are not limited to the following: 1. Pre/Post Fitness Assessments - to determine cardio respiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition. 2. Written Exams - to assess cognitive understanding of fitness/wellness concepts 3. Attendance/Workout Charts or Exercise Journals - to record and monitor personal fitness program to improve fitness parameters 4. Laboratory Assignments - to determine how gender impacts health risks, dietary habits, and exercise habits and to determine personal stress level and develop a plan to reduce stress 5. Health/Wellness Inventories - to evaluate personal habits to determine impact on health/wellness.Final Grade will be based upon the following: 1. Class Participation and Attendance: (40 points) *daily exercise journal will be 10 points *attendance will be 15 points *intensity of workout will be 15 points 2. Written Examinations/Laboratory Assignments: (40 points) *In class laboratory assignments to be averaged for 10 points *mid-term exam for 10 points of grade (March 7) *final exam for 20 points of grade (Dec. 12) 3. Physical Fitness (20 points) *Completion of pre- physical fitness assessments will be 5 points *Post-physical fitness assessments will be 15 points Grade Scale 90-100 A 80-89 B 70-79 C 60-69 D 59 or below F Obtaining Your Grades at the End of the Semester Final Grade Reports are no longer mailed. Convenient access is available online at www.econnect.dcccd.edu. Use your student identification number when you log onto eConnect, an online system developed by the DCCCD to provide you with timely information regarding your college record. Your grades will also be printed on your Student Advising Report, which is available in the Admissions Office. Warm up time-10 minutes Cardio workout-20 minutes Weight lifting-25 minutes Cool down time-10 minutes Attendance Policy: Attendance is very important for progress to be made. After three absences, five points will be subtracted for each day absent. In addition, students who arrive late to class will also have point deductions after the third late arrival. Students who are receiving any form of financial aid should check with the Financial Aid Office prior to withdrawing from classes. Withdrawals may affect your eligibility to receive further aid and could cause you to be in a position of repayment for the current semester. Students who fail to attend or participate after the drop date are also subject to this policy. Financial Aid Statement for Distance Learning Classes If you are receiving Financial Aid grants or loans and are enrolled in a Distance Learning class, you must show participation in this class prior to the certification date by either e-mailing or contacting the instructor or logging on to eCampus. Do not drop or stop attending any classwithout consulting the Financial Aid Office. Changes in your enrollment level and failing grades may require that you repay financial aid funds. Repeating This Course: (Third Attempt to Enroll in a Course) Effective for Fall Semester 2005, the Dallas County Community Colleges will charge additional tuition to students registering the third or subsequent time for a course. All third and subsequent attempts of the majority of credit and Continuing Education/Workforce Training courses will result in additional tuition to be charged. Developmental Studies and some other courses will not be charged a higher tuition rate.
