Opportunity for students to assess their interest and suitability for teaching. Prerequisites: None. COURSE NOTE: Requires minimum 30 hours of field experience in elementary or secondary classroom environment. Required Textbook: Teaching in America by George Morrison, 5th Edition. Available at GCC Bookstore and Amazon.com. Course Competencies 1. Evaluate current statistics and trends in the field, and personal motives when considering education as a career. 2. Analyze the political and economic influences on education at the federal and state levels. 3. Identify and explain the current issues confronting public education, including legal and ethical concerns. 4. Analyze historic events in education and their importance and impact on education today. 5. Evaluate the major philosophies of education and describe your personal philosophy of education. 6. Explain how national and state standards influence curriculum development, assessment, accountability, and classroom practices. 7. Synthesize the factors that influence education and make it so complex. 8. Participate in a K-12 classroom field experience for a minimum of 30 hours. 9. Analyze instruction, relationships, and classroom management strategies observed in your 30-hour field experience. 10. Anyone who does not complete the field experience will fail this course. 2Each section of the portfolio is worth 25 points. The following sections must be included in your portfolio. 1. School report card 2. Learning environment 3. Planning, instruction, and assessment 4. Cultural diversity 5. Special needs children 6. Parent involvement 7. Technology 8. Teacher expectations 9. Reflection 10. Documentation of Field Experience/Assignments/Evaluations/Thank you Attendance Policy Attendance is required for successful completion of this course. There is a maximum of one (1) absence (except official absences) allowed. Anyone exceeding this amount without contacting the instructor may be withdrawn from the course by the instructor. Official absences are those stated in the 2009-10 Student Handbook. Students who participate in college-sanctioned activities that require classes to be missed, will be given opportunities to make up examinations and other graded in-class work. However, absence from class or examinations due to college-sanctioned activities does not relieve students from responsibility for any part of the course work required during the period of the absence. Students should inform the instructor early in the semester of required class absences. Students who have an official capacity in a college-sponsored function must show proof of their participation in that event. A portion of your grade is set aside for attendance and participation. Each class session is worth 10 points for attendance/participation. You cannot participate if you are not in class, even if you have a valid reason for not being there. I cannot give you credit for attendance/participation if you are not present. Withdrawal Policy The last day to withdraw from a course without the instructor’s signature is October 2 (THAT IS NOT A REGULAR CLASS DAY FOR US). After this date, you must obtain the instructor’s signature and the instructor has two options - W and Y. “W” is withdrawal, passing. “Y” is withdrawal, failing. The “Y” will count against your grade point average. 3Testing Policy Students will be expected to take all tests in class, on the day indicated on the syllabus or by the instructor. In case of extreme emergency, you may contact me before the scheduled class time to arrange for a make-up test. The test may be a different version. If your absence is not an emergency and you do not contact me before the class, you will be given a “0” for the test. Due Dates Due dates for assignments will be specific. You will be given ample time to complete all assignments. There will be a 25% deduction for each class period an assignment is late. If you are absent on the date the assignment is DUE, it is YOUR responsibility to find a way to get the assignment turned in on time. Emailing the assignment to me is acceptable and highly encouraged. Being absent on the date the assignment is given or due, is NOT an excuse for late work. Portfolios absolutely will NOT be accepted late. Assignments For each written assignment handed in, staple all pages, do not use paper clips. All assignments must be typed or word-processed, and double-spaced. Assignments deemed unacceptable in terms of organization, coherence, clarity, grammar, syntax, and etc. will not be graded and will be returned for revisions. Grading Your grade in this course will be a compilation of points from attendance, assignments, participation at the 16 classes, portfolio and three tests.
