Specific Language ImpairmentCurrent LectureReceptive vs. Expressive Language- Receptive: Ability to understand the domains of language- Expressive: The ability to speak or use the domains of language- In typically developing children, the ability to understand a certain part of language (reception) always comes before the ability to produce or use it (expression). Differences vs. Delays vs. Disorders- Differenceso Variations of a symbols system used by a group o Reflect regional, social, cultural, or ethnic differences- Delayso Child is developing receptive and expressive language skills in typical ORDER but at a slower rate- Disorderso Child is producing unusual language forms, not seen in typically developing children These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.Developmental vs. Acquired- Developmental Language Impairmento No known biological or cognitive cause- Acquired Language Impairmento The result of or secondary to: syndrome, health condition, injury or illness after birth Assessment- Case History – Birth, developmental, medical historyo Looking for birth complications, primary deficits or medical issues that might leadto language disorders; check developmental milestones- Hearing Evaluation o Assess structures and functions of hearing system- Oral Peripheral Examinationo Assess structures and functions of speech system - Formal Language Testing & Language sampling and analysiso Evaluate the 5 domains of language (Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Semantics, Pragmatics)o Determine which are are impaired o Characterize abilities and weaknessesCommon Language Impaired Populations- Late Talkerso Early Delay in language in the absence of cognitive, motor, sensory, social, emotional disorders, or environmental deprivationo Usually identified around age 2o 10-15% of 2 year olds are late talkerso Characteristics: Small expressive vocabulary, delayed onset of speech, failure to combine words into phrases and sentences, delayed acquisition of phonemes and morphemes Children with strong gestural and play skills and good receptive language usually catch up- Specific Language Impairmento “significant limitations in language functioning not attributed to deficits in hearing, oral structure & function, or general intelligence.” o SLI is usually identified not by its characteristics, but by RULING OUT other disorders – there is a persistent language deficit with no other deficits or identifiable causes o They have normal IQ, with low verbal IQ o 7% of children ages 3-5o Not diagnosed until age 4 to differentiate late-talkerso Cause?  genetic predisposition toward SLI (runs in families); documented brain differenceso Characteristics delayed motor skills and clumsiness delayed expressive language skills difficulty with syntax & morphology - especially pronouns, verb tense, complex and compound sentences; sound immature semantic problems - weaker word knowledge, smaller vocabulary; difficulty remember words produces more word errors Although friendly and, often have trouble making and keeping friends; socially
